Lot 790 of 425: A Kuba tribal mask, Moshambwooy, Democratic Republic of Congo, the hide face overall decorated with panels of cowrie shells, with bead work stylised hair and beadwork nose, with fibre fringe to the base, on a metal stand Provenance: Purchased at Phillips 23rd October 1999, lot 68. Note: This mask represents the mythical founder of the Bushoong clan of the Kuba kingdom. They are used in tribal dances as part of initiation ceremonies. Collected by A. P. Mabberley, Kinshasa circ. 1920.
